"The union of the churches is not achieved through compromise of the truth. Union is possible only in the Truth — the Faith once and for all delivered to the saints."

Saint Nektarios of Pentapolis

Wonderworker · Metropolitan of Pentapolis · Theologian Against Ecumenism

Feast Day: November 9 (Patristic Calendar)

Saint Nektarios of Aegina (1846–1920) reposed on 9 November 1920 — four years before the Greek hierarchy imposed the Revised Julian Calendar in 1924. He is therefore a saint of the undivided, pre-innovation Orthodox Church, untouched by any association with the innovations that followed. He belongs to us — because he belongs to the Church that existed before the break.

His theological writings are an explicit repudiation of the ecumenist movement. In his treatise On the Unity of the Church, he wrote: 'The union of the churches is not achieved through compromise of the truth, nor through the silencing of doctrinal differences. Union is possible only in the Truth — the Faith once and for all delivered to the saints.' He wrote this years before the ecumenical movement institutionalized precisely the compromise he condemned.

Critically: the spiritual children whom St. Nektarios personally formed — the nuns of the Holy Trinity Monastery on Aegina, whom he guided as their father confessor and abbot — remained on the Old Calendar after 1924. His closest disciples, those who knew him best, chose the Genuine Orthodox path. Their witness is the most intimate testimony to where their elder's heart truly stood.

Holy New Martyr Catherine of Mandra

In Memory · †November 15/28, 1927

Saint Catherine of Mandra — First Martyr of the Old Calendar Struggle

In November 1927, three years after the Greek hierarchy imposed the Revised Calendar, police surrounded a church in Mandra, Attica, on the orders of the new-calendar Archbishop of Athens — to arrest the faithful's Old Calendar priest. Catherine Routis, a 27-year-old mother of two, formed a human wall with the other pious women. When a policeman raised his rifle-butt to strike Father Christopher, Catherine covered him with her body. She received the mortal blow to the back of her head. She died seven days later, whispering "Most Holy Theotokos…" Her last note to her husband asked him to care for their children — one four years old, the other a few months old.

A mother of two, aged 27, who shielded her priest with her own body and received the blow meant for him.

Glorified as a saint by the Holy Synod of the Church of the True Greek Orthodox Christians of Greece, September 6/19, 2014.
